Microbubble injection is a new carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology being trialled at CO2CRC’s Otway International Test Centre (OITC), where tiny CO₂ bubbles suspended in water are used to improve underground storage. These microbubbles are less buoyant than conventional CO₂ gas, dissolve faster and spread more evenly, helping to trap CO₂ more effectively. In early 2026, up to 10,000 tonnes of CO₂ will be injected under strict environmental monitoring, with results that could unlock new, previously overlooked storage sites in Australia and around the world.
