PRESS RELEASE
Today, CO2CRC CEO, Dr Matthias Raab, had the great pleasure of visiting the newly launched Santos carbon capture and storage (#CCS) project in Moomba, a milestone that reaffirms Australia’s commitment to deploying world-class emissions reduction technology.
This is a significant milestone in the CCS journey as Moomba CCS is fully operational and Australia’s first large-scale onshore CCS project, storing CO2 in the same geological reservoirs that have held oil and gas in place for tens of millions of years.
Santos are to be commended for the amazing pace with which they have built and commissioned the project, demonstrating that CCS is a commercially viable and scalable emissions reduction solution crucial for achieving net-zero goals.
This milestone would not have been possible without the critical legislative and regulatory support of the South Australian Government, which continues to play a leading role in advancing carbon management initiatives.
This site visit allows us to see the operation firsthand, witnessing the remarkable progress and the dedication of the team on the ground. Nowhere is the research value of CO2CRC clearer than in its contributions to Moomba CCS. Our expertise and technical capabilities, including support via our professional services subsidiary CO2Tech, have played a role in supporting the project’s success.
The project has stored up to 340,000 tonnes of CO2e thus far, with the technology and reservoir performing as expected, putting Moomba CCS on track to sequester up to 1.7 million tonnes safely and permanently per annum. The project is only limited by the availability and supply of CO2.
Beyond Moomba, we are seeing unprecedented investment in CCS across the Asia-Pacific, reinforcing its importance in the global transition to a low-carbon economy. The $15 billion Chevron-Indonesia CCS deal demonstrates that CCS is gaining momentum in Southeast Asia. Australia must seize this opportunity to maintain its leadership and secure long-term economic benefits.
Thank you to Santos for hosting such a momentous occasion.
