How CCUS helps clean up the environment

CCUS means that CO₂ produced at industrial scale can be captured before it is able to reach the atmosphere. This is a critical step in reducing emissions and helping Australia and nations around the world meet ambitious reduction targets.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Special Report on Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage found that carbon capture and storage (CCS) can lower overall mitigation costs and improve flexibility to effectively reduce emissions. The IPCC’s Working Group III said carbon capture and storage is a critical decarbonization strategy in most mitigation pathways.

Alongside renewables and increasing investment in hydrogen and batteries, CCUS can make Australia a world leader in decarbonisation technologies and innovation.
