Nirranda South, Victoria – 13 December 2024 – CO2CRC is proud to announce the successful injection of its 100,000th tonne of carbon dioxide at the Otway International Test Centre, marking a significant milestone in carbon capture and storage (CCS) research. This achievement underscores the pivotal role of CO2CRC and its research partners in positioning Australia as a global leader in CCS innovation and technology.

The Otway International Test Centre (OITC) has been at the forefront of CCS research for over 16 years, demonstrating the effectiveness and permanence of geological carbon storage. This milestone reflects the dedication and collaboration with leading research organisations both in Australia and internationally, solidifying Australia’s reputation in the global CCS community.

Dr Matthias Raab, CEO of CO2CRC, said reaching the 100,000th tonne milestone was a testament to our commitment to the rigour of our science and engineering to advance CCS technologies with global impact.

“Quality is no coincidence, and the Otway International Test Centre continues to play a crucial role in demonstrating that CCS is a viable and essential technology for reducing emissions and combating climate change,” Dr Raab said.

“The success of our CCS projects at Otway not only showcases Australia’s capabilities but also highlights the importance of CCS in achieving our national emission reduction targets for 2030 and 2050. As we prepare to host the 2026 Global Carbon Capture Conference in Perth, this milestone reinforces our leadership and innovation in the field.”

Local Federal Member of Parliament, the Hon Dan Tehan MP, said carbon capture and storage was an essential technology in efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

“The Otway International Test Centre highlights Australia’s leadership in CCS technology. This facility is a shining example of how we can leverage innovative solutions to meet our emission reduction targets and drive economic growth.”

Dr Raab said CCS is essential for industries to transition to a low-carbon future, and the work being done here is critical for our national and global climate goals.

“Our ongoing research and development efforts at the Otway International Test Centre are essential for driving forward the CCS agenda. We are committed to continuing our work to provide high-integrity carbon accounting and secure CO2 storage solutions that will benefit both the environment and the economy.”

CO2CRC’s dedication to advancing carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies has delivered substantial financial benefits to its member companies. Those who joined over ten years ago have accessed research valued at $30 for every dollar they have invested in CO2CRC, while companies that joined five years ago have seen even higher returns. These significant returns underscore the value of CO2CRC’s cutting-edge research and development efforts, highlighting the economic advantages of investing in innovative CCS technologies.
